12 Killers of the Christian

by Bobbie Powers

Chapter 1

 Your Past

Like many of you that are reading this book, my past was

not one that I would care to repeat, let alone remember. And

as a Christian I need to be free of the past and its hold or

effects on me.

Memories, guilt, and hurt from the past can keep us as

Christians looking over our shoulder and can hinder our

forward walk with God.

If we are constantly looking back as we try to move

forward we will stumble and fall in our walk with God. We

will get injured spiritually and not attain the high calling

of God in our lives.

The devil knows this fact and tries to use the memory as

a weapon to defeat us daily. He constantly brings up our

sinful failures and losses in order to get our attention on

the past and off our present walk with God.

His purpose is not to just make us feel guilty or

miserable, but to get our focus off of God. For when we

behold the Lord Jesus Christ we are changed into His

likeness. God's power comes into play and the devil's

kingdom suffers loss. Therefore, the devil wants to focus

our attention anywhere but on the Lord Jesus Christ--hence

the focus on our past.

Another way your past can kill your walk as a Christian

is through past generational sins. We call these generation

curses because they affect one generation after another.

These curses can be "hereditary" (physical) such as

alcoholism, cancer, or diabetes. The curses can be spiritual

such as demonic oppression that comes because of occult

involvement. Also, these generational curses can affect your

mind or emotions (soul area) such as mental illness or

phobias.

The important thing to remember about any of these

"curses" is that at some point in the past they were caused

by sin. The Bible states that the curse "causeless" will not

come.

Now, before you get offended and say that "diabetes" for

example does not come from sin, let's take a walk in the

garden--the Garden of Eden. When God created Adam and Eve

there was no sickness. However, after they sinned death and

curses came to the human race. Sickness indeed entered as a

result of sin.

The emphasis on generation curses is not on which

generation caused it, from Adam to present, but the killing

effect these curses can have on the Christian. Hosea 4:6

states that, "My people perish from lack of knowledge..".

The word perish in Hebrew means the process of rotting or

decaying.

Many believers are in bondage because they have not

realized what Jesus can do in their lives. They are making

statements claiming certain diseases, as they look at their

past.

If we are going to claim our future by looking at the

past then we need to look at the "correct" past of the

Christian.

The Bible says that when we became saved we became "new"

creatures in Christ Jesus. Old things were passed away. All

things became new. When we were saved we received a new

bloodline--a new heritage. God became our Father--we

received His "genes".

We are no longer under the control of the 1st Adam and

his generations. Jesus became the 2nd Adam. He took the

curse of sin for us, in order that we the captives held in

bondage might be free. "Whom the Son sets free is free

indeed." We are joint heirs with Christ Jesus.

Even doctors recognize the validity of generational

curses, as they always ask for "your family history". But

only the Christian can know the reality of being freed from

"family generation curses" because they have changed

"bloodlines, and their new heavenly Father, whose genes they

now carry, has no history of sin--no history of curses.

Thanks be to Jesus for reuniting us with our true

heritage, our Father, God, in whose image we were created.

Jesus only can heal our memory, so that we can forgive

and forget the past. Jesus gave us the freedom of a new

"bloodline" so that the past can have no hold on the

believer.

The Christian's past can no longer be a killer.
