  • Are curses real?

Yes

Deuteronomy chapter 28 lists curses and the reason why they come

"But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day, that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee. Dt. 28.15

Curses come because of the breaking of God's commandments and statutes (laws).

Deuteronomy 28 shows that God is clearly in control--using verses such as:

The Lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly, because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me. (Dt. 28.20)

Deuteronomy 28 discusses curses placed on a person, their offspring, their possessions, their job, the places they go and the things they do. The chapter discusses curses that cause enemies to win and curses that keep a person in debt and bondage.

Specific sickness is listed throughout Deuteronomy 28

The Lord shall smite thee with a consumption (a progressive wasting away of the body esp. from pulmonary tuberculosis), and with a fever, and with an inflammation (response to cellular injury…redness, heat, and pain), and with an extreme burning…and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.Dt.28.22

The Lord will smite thee with botch (an inflammatory sore, boil) of Egypt, and with emerods (tumors), and with the scab (contagious itch caused by parasitic mites), and with the itch (contagious eruption in skin-stimulation of pain receptors in the skin-caused by a mite), whereof thou canst not be healed. Dt 28.27

The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart…and no man shall save thee. Dt.28.28-29

The Lord shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore boil that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.Dt.28.35

Then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore (severe) sicknesses, and of long continuance.

Moreover, he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of, and they shall cleave unto thee. Dt. 28. 59-60

Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the Lord bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed. Dt.28.61

And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest; but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind.

And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have no assurance of thy life: Dt.28.65-66

  • Point 1--God is a just and a holy God. Man is given a choice to obey His law.
  • Point 2--God is in charge. The curse comes when His law is broken.
  • Point 3--Man can't take away a curse. Man can't keep the law.
  • Point 4--God is love and doesn't want man destroyed--He sees that man can't keep the law--therefore before man was created by God, God had a plan to save man from the curses that would come from breaking God's law.
  • Point 5--God sent Jesus. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3.16)
  • Point 6--Jesus took the curse. "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree; That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through  faith. Galatians 3.13-14
  • Point 7--Receive Jesus and all He died to give you. Jesus came that you might have life and have it more abundantly. He came to free you from sin and the wages of sin which is death. Jesus, the Son of God, born of a virgin, took the curse upon Himself so that you and I could go free.

In Christ,
