Take  the sword of the Spirit

And take ... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;  Ephesians 6.17

The sword is not just a sword , but it is the sword that belongs to the Spirit of God.  It is His weapon.  That is why it is effective.

This sword is further defined as the Word of God.

The command is to take it.

Use it in battle.

Speak the Word against all enemies.

When Jesus (who is the Word made flesh) confronted the devil in the wilderness--He used the sword of the Spirit.  He said "It is written..."

Remember, a warrior must be familiar with the weapon he is given in order to use it properly in the time of battle.

II Timothy 2.15 states,  "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,  rightly dividing the word of truth. "
